Charming painting representing a typical scene of peasant life, the return from the fair with characters dancing around a cart.

Biography :
Born in 1798 in Mirecourt (Meurthe-et-Moselle Dept.), died in 1850 in Paris, Jean-Louis-Francois Demay was a painter specializing in genre scenes and landscapes. As a self-trained artist, Demay participated in the Paris Salon from 1827 until 1846. He then represented lively scenes depicting markets, fairs, festivals, and peasant life, at the time of the French Restoration (1815-1830).

Museology :
The painted works made by Jean-François Demay are now either part of private collections, or exhibited in renowned museums, such as the Magnin Museum in Dijon, who own ‘The last Stop’ (oil on panel, Inv. 1938 F 266), or the Bordeaux Fine Arts Museum, who have ‘Landscape’ (oil on canvas, dated 1829, Inv. Bx E 714 ; Bx M 6553).
