A Georgian gold ring set with a carnelian intaglio of Prometheus creating man.
The intaglio dates to the 1st - 2nd century AD and the ring is early 19th century.
The intaglio measures 1.3 x 1cm.
The ring is a size T UK / 9.5 US.
The intaglio was most likely damaged when it was removed from its Roman mount during excavation. The early 19th century goldsmith that created the ring has incorporated an elegant gold repair to the setting of the intaglio, turning an area of damage into something of very subtle beauty.
The Creation of Man by Prometheus; Prometheus and Epimetheus were spared imprisonment in Tatarus because they had not fought with their fellow Titans during the war with the Olympians. They were given the task of creating man. Prometheus shaped man out of mud, and Athena breathed life into his clay figure.
