Round pilasters projecting on four sides, set on an offset plinth, support the octagonal flared basin. The quarter-round base is decorated with dense, mannerist foliage, some of which is still decorated with scrolling acanthus scrolls. At the corners, mystical fauns look down on the characteristic, magical creatures of the time. Above, a multi-stepped peripheral profile forms the upper part, topped by a profiled lead basin.
This fountain illustrates the masterly demands of High Renaissance stone carving. The masterly quality of the workmanship in all its brilliance makes this fountain an important testimony of architectural inspiration and museum quality.
The work is in Burgundy white stone. Burgundy around 1560
The lead basin and a matching lion mask made of lead have been added in more recent times.
