Saint Mathias the Apostle - 18th century

“We must resist our flesh, attribute no value to it, and concede nothing to it to flatter it, but rather strengthen the elevation of our soul by means of Faith and Knowledge” taught Saint Mathias.
Appointed by divine providence to replace Judah, he was the twelfth of our apostles and also received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

His iconographic attribute, as so often in the representation of the Saints, is the instrument of his martyrdom. The writings tell us that he was finished off on a cross, by a liberating ax blow.

From the 18th century, our representation of Saint Mathias is in carved and gilded wood with uniform polychromy. Dressed in the antique, he carries the axe, the Holy Scriptures and a purse.
Under its base a circular hole, in line with the heart of Mathias, very probably hosted relics. It must have been sealed with a small wax seal.

It is in excellent condition, despite some slight lacks and chips of color.
