Very effective torturing device, used to break thumbs and other fingers by tightening the screws. This type of thumbscrew was widely used in Europe to extract confessions from prisoners. Because of its size it was easy to transport and hence also used outside torture chambers. It was particularly popular in the late 16th and early 17th century during inquisition and other witch hunts. Italy ca 1600. Made of iron and walnut. Dimensions: 21x19x4,5cm
