Table lamp, school of Josef Hoffmann, probably Emanuel Josef Margold with Loetz decorations Papillon, ca. 1907
As a teacher at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, Josef Hoffmann taught some very talented architects and designers. His distinctive style influenced several generations of artists and continued to have an impact in the world of design for a long time. This table lamp was probably designed by one of Josef Hoffmann’s students. Emanuel Josef Margold in particular was known to use wavy ornaments like those running around the lamp shade edge. The material used and the “hammer stroke decoration” on the brass are also typical stylistic features of Josef Hoffmann.
Finally, the combination of this design with glass from the Loetz manufacture is a clear indication of its origin in the school of Josef Hoffmann. Similar designs can also be found in the production of the Wiener Werkstätte from around 1907. This object is a fantastic object from the peak of Viennese Jugendstil.
