Bramer was known for his genre, religious and history paintings. He is noted for his nocturnal scenes, usage of exotic details, costume and setting. He stayed away from typical Dutch themes such as landscapes, still lifes, portraits and genre pieces and he rarely painted Italianate pastoral scenes popular with the Utrecht Caravaggisti.
