Young Bishop
(France, Lorraine, Fine Limestone, ca 1500)
Sculpture of an exceptional quality.
This sculpture should be situated in Northeast France (Lorraine), more specifically in the region of Neufchâteau at the very beginning of 1500.
There are interesting similarities (eyes) with the work of the ‘Maître de Bayon’ (especially with the angel in his ‘Entombment’ in the church from Bayon from 1515) but Mrs. Bérénice Puiseux (cf below) goes further and attributes this work to the ‘Maître de Chaumousey‘ also known as ‘Maître I.W .‘ according to the initials on some of his sculptures. He was later identified by Jacques Baudoin as Jacquemin Wiriot, goldsmith, engraver and sculptor from Neufchâteau, active around 1500 in Chaumousey, Neufchâteau and Gugney-aux-Aulx. His sculpture of Saint Nicolas in Gugney-aux-Aulx (50 km to the East of Neufchâteau) has many points of resemblance: same shape of the face (with that characteristic significantly narrower part under the chin), long nose with wide open nostrils, mouth minimally opened and strikingly similar eyes (same eyecavities and exactly same eyelids).
Accompanied by an art-historical analysis from Bérénice Puiseux (Galerie Puiseux, rue de l’Université, Rive Gauche, Paris), who was during 12 years the assistant of the famous Jacqueline Boccador (specialized in French medieval sculpture).
