Christofle - Important Centerpiece in Sterling Silver 19th Century

Solid silver centerpiece in a round shape, placed on rolling clog feet. The subject is a decoration of sheep as well as heads of bulls framing a sculpture of a Shepherd dressed in the antique, probably CERES symbolizing earthly fertility. This sculpture rests on a fluted, leafy base, shaped like cornucopias.

From 1870, the Ministry of Agriculture instituted a competition between the greatest French goldsmiths for the creation of pieces of silverware given to the winners of the Agricultural Exhibitions and CHRISTOFLE participated in it.
