Tanabe Chikuunsai II (1910-2000) Bamboo Hanging Basket, Japan mid 20th Century.
A rare hanging basket by Tanabe Chikuunsai II, made of madake (timber bamboo) and using tobi-gozame-ami (skipping mat plating), twining, wrapping, fitted with a bamboo hanging loop. With a lacquered bamboo otoshi (water container) and its original wood tomobako(storage box) titled Seigaiha kakehanakago( blue ocean flower basket), signed Tekisuikyo Chikuunsai. Tsukuru and sealed Denri no in and Chikuunsai.

Tanabe Chikuunsai II, son of Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1877-1937) was the second artist of the Tanabe dynasty to bear the name of Chikuunsai wich means Bamboo cloud. He was famous for his Chinese style baskets, sometimes called bujin kago (scholar basket) but after the death of hus father in 1937, he changed to more Japanese style baskets.
In 1952 he received the Tokusen price and the Asakura at the Nitten’s 8th exhibition. In 1959, he won the Osaka Prefecture Arts Prize and he 1981, the Japanese government promoted him to the 4th place in Zuiho-Sho.
