Offered by Matthew Holder
A portrait miniature of a Gentleman.
The oil painting on copper is set in its original gold and enamel frame.
English, circa 1660.
Measures 6.5 x 4.4cm (excluding loose bail).
There appears to be some minor restorations to the enamel.
A portrait miniature of ‘An unknown man’, circa. 1650 (accession number: P.90-1937) can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The similarities between the younger man painted at an earlier earlier date and the present, marginally later example of a slightly older man are striking and it is a possibility that both portraits depict the same man within a decade or two of his life.
