Saint Catherine of Alexandria, italian work of XVI century.
Polycrome wood.
The saint is represented with a sword and a holy book. The sumptuousness of the clothing is highlighted by an incredible and original polychromy. The golden fleurs-de-Lys on her orange cloak, contrast with the silver leaf which is also sublimated by an oriental inspired decoration.
She was born in Alexandria in the IV century from a noble family, forced to marry the emperor, she let her Christian faith predominated on the family duties, so that she was condemned to terrible suffering...
