A Medieval amuletic gold ring set with a cabochon sapphire.
English or French, 14th century.
Around the bezel of the ring is an abbreviated amuletic inscription in Latin which translates as: In time with faith, peace will come to the many.
The ring is size O UK / 7 US.
The head of the ring measures 1.4 x 1.1cm.
Sapphires represented heaven and eternal life, as well as symbolising the Virgin. Sapphires were believed to be able to change colour if the wearer acted sinfully or lacked faith, it was because of this belief that jewels set with sapphires were worn as as symbols of honesty and devout faith.
