A large agate intaglio of Cupid and Flora.
South German or North Italian, 17th century.
Measures 6.1 x 5cm.
Mounted in a 19th century unmarked silver frame which measures 9 x 6.5cm.
The intaglio has been broken and reattached.
The intaglio is carved with Flora holding her horn of plenty in one hand, whilst she raises a key to the heavens in the other. Cupid stands beside Flora holding a basket and catching flowers as they fall from the sky around them.
A similar example can be found in the ‘Guy Ladrière Collection of Gems and Rings’ by Diana Scarisbrick, Claudia Wagner and John Boardman, object no. 156, page 158.
