Frank Myers Boggs (1855-1926) - Notre Dame from the arsenal harbor

Frank Myers Boggs is an impressionist painter of American origin. He arrived in Paris at a very young age and studied under the great master Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts. A very good draughtsman, he followed in the footsteps of Boudin and Jongkind.

After many trips between New York and Paris, Boggs finally settled in the Paris region and took French nationality in 1923. He exhibited until the end of his life at the Salon des artistes français, where he received numerous awards, including a silver medal at the 1898 World's Fair. As early as 1882, the French government bought a painting of the Place de la Bastille from him. His immense talent was recognised in many cities where he exhibited during his lifetime: Nice, Munich, London, Philadelphia, Chicago... His works are preserved in international museums and notably by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Water and sky hold an essential place in the work of Franck Boggs. It is here that his impressionist technique is fully expressed: With small and faintly pate touches, Boggs leaves us magnificent views of French ports, Venice, Normandy... But it is indisputably the views of Paris and the Seine that are the most sought after.

Our painting is a view of the Seine with Notre Dame Cathedral seen from the east. The composition is rich with intense activity in the foreground at the Arsenal port. In the background, the Seine divides to embrace the islands of Saint Louis and Ile de la Cité. The treatment of the ripples in the Seine is typical of the artist. This is a large work, done in the 1900s, in perfect condition and on its original canvas.
