Charles Henry Tenré (1854-1926),
View of the Palace of Versailles from the Place d'Armes, c. 1904, oil on canvas,
H: 2.88 cm x W: 2.15 cm (SC)
These two large decorative panels are emblematic of Henry Tenré's art. The painter was fond of landscape painting and representations of royal palaces (Versailles, Fontainebleau), which he exhibited on numerous occasions during his long career.
Henry Tenré completed a solid apprenticeship in painting. He attended the workshops of Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre at the Académie Julian from 1875 to 1885 and then trained with the multi-medal-winning landscape painter Edmond Yon. A member of the Salon des Artistes Français, he exhibited there from 1883 until his death. Henry Tenré was renowned for his ability to paint large decorative landscapes, interior scenes with an intimate atmosphere (Jacques Doucet's hotel on rue Spontini), theatrical representations and social portraits (Mrs. Princess Georges de Radziwill, Mrs. Baroness Gustave de Rothschild, Mrs. H. Machiels, Mlle de Thézillat).
