An Ancient gold ‘Chi-Rho’ ring.
Roman, 3rd - 4th century A.D.
Ring size L UK / 5.75 US.
The bezel is engraved with an early Christian Chi-Rho symbol, flanked by carved scroll shoulders.
The Chi-Rho is created by superimposing the first two letters (XP) of the Greek word for Christ, ???????. The monogram, also called a “Christogram,” primarily represents Jesus Christ, but is also considered to be a common representation of the crucifixion scene.
Formerly in a European private collection in Luxembourg.
The band appears to have been repaired at the reverse.
